Irish Weather Rescue : Met Éireann’s Data Rescue Citizen Science Project

Held on Tuesday, 27th January 2026

10:30am – 1:00pm in Library Link 3, James Joyce Library, Belfield

Met Éireann is asking citizens to help ditigise historical Irish rainfall data from our old weather records. The UCD Citizen Science Community of Practice welcomed Dr. Rhonda McGovern, a postdoctoral researcher at Met Éireann, who showed how to do this.

In this video Rhonda explains how the Weather Rescue project needs as many volunteers as possible worldwide to help digitise 3.5 million daily rainfall observations from 763 stations, spanning from 1864 to 1951.

Watch the short video of the event and description of the project created by Patrice Harrington of UCD Sustainability
